Hormone Health

Most of the time when we think of “hormone health”, we think of our sex hormones – estrogen and progesterone. What if I told you there are many more hormones involved in your hormone health? More importantly, what if I told you that your entire hormone system is connected, and when one aspect is out of balance it has a ripple affect on all of the others. Let’s say for example you are currently going through a period of high stress (haven’t we all?!). Your body responds to this my secreting excess cortisol (stress hormone secreted from your adrenal glands). This in turn can affect your weight by interacting with your blood sugar metabolism. It can affect your sex hormones which in turn will affect your menstrual cycle. It may also affect your sleep by lowering your melatonin levels. Lastly, it can affect your energy levels because it will also affect your thyroid function.

One of the key components to hormone health is looking at the synthesis of these hormones – are we making enough, too much, or too little. The best way to determine this is through blood work and lab testing. With the answer to this question, along with the signals your body is sending you (your symptoms) we can determine the reason WHY. From here we look into the breakdown (liver function) and elimination (digestive, urination, and bowel movement health) of these hormones.

Successful hormone balancing begins with diet and lifestyle changes, herbal supplementation, and stress management.

menstrual health

Your monthly visit from Aunt Flow continues to be one of the most common areas of concern for women. Many women have painful periods, irregular periods, long periods, heavy periods, or no periods. Other women are concerned about PMS symptoms (cramping, bloating, headaches, nausea/vomiting, mood changes, etc). Some women want to know what their birth control options are, which birth control may be best for them, which birth control has minimal side effects, or how to come off birth control safely. Lastly, some women are seeking information about their cycle; how long a “normal” cycle is, what happens when you ovulate, when they should be ovulating and if they are ovulating.

Naturopathic Medicine has many tools that can help address all of your menstrual concerns.

menopause

You are considered to have entered menopause when you have not had a menstrual cycle for over 1 year. Physiologically, our ovarian function declines – which results in your body producing lower amounts of estrogen and progesterone. This results in a vast array of symptoms – hot flashes being one of the most common.

Other symptoms may include:

  • weight gain

  • vaginal dryness, which can also lead to painful intercourse

  • night sweats

  • insomnia

  • decreased libido

  • hair thinning/hair loss

  • anxiety

  • memory decline

  • weak bladder

Symptom relief can be achieved through acupuncture, nutritional supplementation, various herbal interventions, and reducing caffeine.
